Colosseum

About Colosseum

A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, the Colosseum is the largest Roman amphitheatre ever built—an enduring icon of ancient Rome’s love for grand public entertainment.

Architectural Grandeur

Once known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, the Colosseum showcases Roman engineering brilliance. Built around 72 CE, this oval giant spans 189m by 156m and towers over 45m high—a lasting symbol of ancient innovation, power, and architectural mastery.

Design Reflecting Social Hierarchy

The Colosseum held about 50,000 spectators, with seating reflecting social status—elite at the front, common citizens in the middle, and the poor at the top. It had 80 entrances, including special ones for dignitaries. Gladiators entered through one gate, while the fallen were carried out through another.

The Hidden Hypogeum

Beneath the arena lay the hypogeum, a complex two-level network of tunnels, cages, lifts, and trapdoors. Gladiators, wild animals, and stage props were house here, with 80 shafts connecting to the arena floor, allowing for dramatic entrances that thrilled ancient audiences.

A Lasting Symbol of Rome

Though damaged by time, earthquakes, and human activity, the Colosseum still dominates central Rome. Its immense scale, ingenious design, and enduring presence reflect the might of the Roman Empire and serve as a timeless symbol of Rome’s rich and powerful legacy.
