About Pisa

Surrounded by green lawns and under the Tuscan sky, the Piazza deiMiracoli in Pisa is a famous medieval complex home to four iconic monuments thatreflect the city’s rich history, art, and religious devotion.

Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta (The Duomo)

Begun in 1064, this cathedral showcases the elegant Pisan Romanesque style with its white-and-grey marble facade. Inside, it has beautiful mosaics, Corinthian columns, and a coffered ceiling. Highlights include a mosaic of Christ and the intricately carved Gothic pulpit by Giovanni Pisano.

The Baptistery

Italy’s largest baptistery, built between 1152 and the 14th century, combines Romanesque and Gothic styles. Famous for its perfect acoustics, it houses a pulpit by Nicola Pisano, displaying vivid biblical scenes with classical influences.

The Leaning Tower (Campanile)

This freestanding bell tower, begun in 1173, is famous worldwide for its distinctive tilt caused by soft ground. Standing 56m tall, it offers breathtaking views of the square from the top after climbing its 294 spiral steps.

Camposanto Monumentale (Monumental Cemetery)

Built in the 13th century, this sacred cemetery was built to hold sacred soil from Golgotha, brought by Pisan Crusaders. It features impressive frescoes, some damaged during WWII, and provides a peaceful contrast to the grandeur of the other monuments.
